Katrina and the Waves – Walking on Sunshine

I had just graduated high school in 1985 and I was on CoCo beach with some of my friends and this song takes me back there. This is one upbeat and positive song.  The song peaked at #9 on the Billboard 100, #8 on the UK Charts and #3 in Canada… hard to believe this song is 33 years old.

The members were Katrina Leskanich, Kimberley Rew, Vince de la Cruz, and Alex Cooper.

This song has been in almost 70 movies and television series.

Kimberley Rew wrote the song and he also wrote “Going Down To Liverpool” that was covered by the Bangles.

“Walking On Sunshine”

I used to think maybe you love me,
Now baby I’m sure
And I just can’t wait ’til the day when you knock on my doorNow every time I go for the mail box,
Gotta hold myself down
‘Cause I just can’t wait ’til you write me you’re coming around

I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
And don’t it feel good
Alright now
And don’t it feel good
Alright now

I used to think maybe you love me,
I know that it’s true
And I don’t wanna spend all my life just waiting for you
(just waiting for you)

Now I don’t want you back for the weekend,
Not back for a day,
No, no, no
I said, “Baby I just want you back and I want you to stay.”

I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
And don’t it feel good
Alright now
And don’t it feel good
Alright now
And don’t it feel good

Walking on sunshine
Walking on sunshine

I feel the love, I feel the love, I feel the love that’s really real
I feel the love, I feel the love, I feel the love that’s really real

I’m on sunshine baby
I’m on sunshine baby

I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
And don’t it feel good
Alright now
And don’t it feel good
Alright now
And don’t it feel good
Alright now
And don’t it feel good
Alright now

I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine
I’m walking on sunshine

  1. When I looked I was surprised to see they had two other Top 40 hits after this- that I can’t recall at all. Do You Want Crying #37 1985 and That’s The Way #16 1989. I am pretty sure I still have this album. Another great song.

    1. I was surprised also. I remembed that one song and that was it….well I was wrong. I just listened to That’s The Way and I remember it. I had no clue it was them at the time.

      1. I just looked it up and I was surprised…I do remember it. I didn’t know it was Katrina and the Waves.
Off Topic… I’m feeling older today. Hearing about Burt Reynolds…love him or hate him…the guy was fun on screen. I couldn’t believe the roles he turned down.

      2. My favorite Burt movies- The Longest Yard- probably the first adult movie I saw at a movie theater– The End with Dom Deluise and of course Deliverence… I am surprised he lived this long he hasn’t looked very well for a long time…

      3. I’m a southerner…I was required to go see Smokey and the Bandit when it came out.
Deliverance is my favorite movie he was in. That one is a classic no doubt…
He admitted not long ago he didn’t want to challenge himself…just have fun… He tried a little harder later in life.
        Yea he was looking bad.

      4. I saw Smokey and The Bandit… he seemed like he was having fun when he was making movies…a great actor- no- a movie star. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen Deliverance- if its on I’ll watch it kind of movie..

      5. One of the many things Life On Mars got was the early 70’s look- hairstyles… you are right every guy had that mustache in the 70’s..

    1. Dang I like that bass beginning. Personally I wish they would have kept that in.
I couldn’t find much about them…and especially Crazy Elephant…some one hit wonders are not easy to find out about…Thank you for the info!

  2. There was one concert- I think ’85- at the now gone Ontario Place Ampitheatre that police had to shut down in Toronto because it was over-crowded anyway and Katrina made the mistake of inviting fans down to the stage to dance with her…. something of a riot ensued.

  3. Also fair to mention that Kimberley Few big his start as a member of the Soft Boys – a terribly underrated post punk pop group featuring Robyn Hitchcock. When Kim left the group ended up as Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians.
I saw Robyn earlier this year (with Yo La Tengo as his band) and he paid tribute to Kim, playing Going Down to Liverpool.
    Two great songwriters!

    1. Thanks for the info! I appreciate it. I have heard of Yo La Tengo.

They had more known songs also that I realized. I heard the original version of this today and loved that one. It had more of a bass intro…I wish they would have kept it.
