Great power pop song by Matthew Sweet. The song reached #4 on the Alternative Billboard Chart in 1991. The song was off of his 3rd album of the same name. The album was Sweet’s breakthrough album.
The song has a little of everything in it…noisy guitar, loud drums but with a pop melody.
I wanna love somebody
I hear you need somebody to love
Oh, I wanna love somebody
I hear you’re looking for someone to love
‘Cause you need to
Be back in the arms of a good friend
And I need to
Be back in the arms of a girlfriend
I didn’t know nobody
And then I saw you coming my way
Oh, I didn’t know nobody
And then I saw you coming my way
Don’t you need to
Be back in the arms of a good friend?
Oh, ’cause, honey, believe me
I’d sure love to call you my girlfriend
Alright
Don’t you need to
Be back in the arms of a good friend?
Oh, ’cause, honey, believe me
I’d sure love to call you my girlfriend
‘Cause you got a good thing going, baby
You only need somebody to love
Oh, you got a good thing going
You’re only looking for someone to love
‘Cause you need to
Get back in the arms of a good friend
And I’m never gonna set you free
No, I’m never gonna set you free
I bought this when it came out, enjoyed it, then for some reason culled it from my collection – only to re-purchase it years later.

I bought the Girlfriend CD also back then when I heard this song on the radio. Great guitar and drums.

Some songs get forgotten by radio…When I heard it in the 90s I loved it.

Do you have a Spotify channel that you add all these too?

No I don’t have one…I probably need to. I try to find those songs where I get the reaction I got from you. Thanks for the comment

Great tune. I figured he was under-rated in the ’90s and since then I love the cover material he’s done with Susanna Hoffs.

It seems like a lot of power pop artists are overlooked when they release material and then recognized later on… I just listened to “And Your Bird Can Sing” by Sweet and Hoffs…sounds great.

The first Matthew Sweet song that I heard- moved me to go out and buy the album- and I’ve been a fan of his since. Great song and underappreciated artist. Favorite Sweet album- 100% Fun with “Sick Of Myself” and “We’re The Same” my two favorite M.S songs.

I bought the album at the time. Very underappreciated yes…seems like that is typical of power pop artists.
