“Must Have Got Lost” was released in 1974 and it went to #12 in the Billboard Charts and #27 in Canada.
The band came out of the Boston club scene in the late sixties. I always thought they should have been bigger than they were in the 1970s. The didn’t hit their commercial peak until the early 80s with Love Stinks, Come Back, and then the hugely popular Freeze-Frame album in 1983.
After the huge success of Freeze-Frame, Peter Wolf left. The band wanted to go in a techno/pop direction and Peter Wolf disagreed. They continued without their charismatic lead singer but wasn’t too commercially successful.
“Must Have Got Lost” was never a huge hit but it was always a favorite of mine.
Must Have Got Lost
Never thought about tomorrow
Seemed like a long time to come
How could I be so blind, baby
Not to see you were the one
I let ya slip on from me baby
I let you walk on by,
Shoulda loved, you had told me
I refused to love, I let it die
I musta got lost, musta got lost, I musta got lost
Somewhere down the line
Musta got lost, musta got lost
Give away the days you were mine
Don’t know why I let you leave me
Honey, I don’t know
Say its hard to see lovers comin’ babe
Honey I’ve a way to see them go
Musta got lost, musta got lost, musta got lost
Somewhere down the line
Musta got lost, I got lost
Give away the days you were mine
Love can be a sweet thing
Girl I just don’t understand
Made a game outta lovin’ you
Now I hold the losin’ hand
Oh, I musta got lost, musta got lost, musta got lost
Somewhere down the line
Musta got lost, I got lost, girl
Give away the days you were mine
I just don’t understand it
I just don’t understand it
I just don’t understand it
And I musta got lost, musta got lost, musta got lost
Somewhere down the line, hey
Musta got lost, baby, I got lost girl
Give away them days you were mine
Musta got lost, I got lost, musta got lost
Somewhere down the line
Musta got lost, oh I got lost girl
Give away them days you were mine
C’mon
Oh, I got lost, babe, double-crossed
Your lovin’, give it to me all night long
I said your love got me higher,
than I ever been lifted before
I said your love has got me higher,
than I ever been lifted before
Somewhere
Growing up in the Boston suburbs in the 70s, we always thought that the J. Geils Band was as big as the Stones and Led Zeppelin. Geils certainly got more radio airplay than the others and packed the local concert halls. And we all had their albums, especially their 1976 live album, Blow Your Face Out, which EVERYBODY owned. The version of Musta Got Lost from the live album, including the extended Peter Wolf, Raputa-the-beauta, intro was in super heavy rotation on local radio for years. Now living in Los Angeles, I give every juke box in town a heavy dose of all my J. Geils Band favorites as often as possible.
FYI, Peter Wolf is still a very active solo artist. His albums and performances are fantastic.

After I wrote this a few weeks ago I did catch some of Wolf’s solo stuff. I knew they were big big in Boston. I understand fully why Wolf left…that is not him.
I like him as well as Mick Jagger. Wolf has a great stage presence.

Must of Got Lost was a regional AOR hit in west Tx where I’m from. J. Geils Band was big in SoCal and we had a similar music trajectory, I guess you could say. People who didn’t really know the band always assumed that Peter Wolf was J. Geils. He was charismatic, but I didn’t care for his rap too much. He and Faye Dunaway were an item back in the day.

Peter was very cool to me. His stage presence was great. I’ve always liked that band.

Song “must have got lost ” where I was, I don’t ever remember hearing it in the ’70s. The first I heard of them was the 1980 “Love Stinks” album, and then of course “Freeze Frame” which I, like every other Canadian teen I think, bought and played endlessly. Only after that album, with the live “Showtime” release did I hear this song and some of their other early stuff. For straight ahead rock’n’roll they were a very good band in ’70s and one wonders why they didn’t do a bit better

I always thought they should have been bigger. People from Boston said they were played as much as Led Zeppelin…just not on a national level

After Wolf left it seems like the J. Geils Band went into the Federal Witness Protection Program.. Underrated and it seems like mostly forgotten group today. Wonder how the years have treated Angel?

Wolf is a great frontman. He has that skinning British thing going on.
Angel would not be the same!
