The Hollies – The Air That I Breathe

This Hollies song was released in 1974 and it made it to #6 in the US Billboard Charts and #2 in the UK. The band did not write the song. It was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood.

I was seven when the song came out and it was one song I remember because of that dream-like guitar intro by the underrated lead guitar player for the Hollies…Tony Hicks.

Allan Clarke lead singer of the Hollies.

‘The Air That I Breathe’, another song just like ‘He Ain’t Heavy’. A classic song and again that’s where Phil Everly came back into my life. I went to that same office where I wrote ‘Long Cool Woman’ in one day. The secretary of Ron Richards said that she’d just listened to a Phil Everly album and there was one song on it which was beautiful. She thought that I should do that song, obviously, she meant with The Hollies. I listened to it and obviously felt that I wasn’t going to be able to do it as well as Phil. So they said ‘You gotta try. Do it the way Phil would sing it’. And that’s what I did when we recorded it.’ It’s a beautiful song to sing, ‘Harmony-wise, Terry did a great job on that. To me, that’s again a classic that will go on, and on again.’

“The Air That I Breathe”

If I could make a wish
I think I’d pass
Can’t think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat, no books to readMaking love with you
Has left me peaceful, warm, and tired
What more could I ask
There’s nothing left to be desired
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleepSometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathePeace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep

Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe

Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you

  1. Excellent tune! Loved it as a kid, still like it a lot. And it was reborn, in a manner of speaking, in ’90s through Radiohead, LOL (“Creep” by them sounded so similar they were sued for plagiarism)

    1. You know I had that in there about that but lost it when I pulled up a history version of it… And I can see why they sued..it does sound like it including the way they sang it.

I really started to pay attention to Tony Hicks since I read Graham’s book…he is a very underrated guitar player.

  2. Allan Clarke is spot on about how great the Phil Everly version is, from the album Star Spangled Springer. Its odd that Everly’s didn’t gain any traction on the charts, especially considering that the Hollies version, as great as it is, stays very close to the Everly version. Great tune!

    1. I agree it is a good version. I always liked the Everly Brothers.
There is an album I’ve never heard called “Two Yanks in England” that Clarke, Nash and Hicks wrote 8 of the songs for them…It didn’t hit.
It seemed to be hard on many 1950s acts after the Beatles arrived. They just weren’t listened to as much…well besides Elvis.
