Lindisfarne – Meet me on the Corner

This is another song I discovered watching Life On Mars. I never heard of the song much less Lindisfarne. It’s a feel-good, quirky song with bright harmonies. It was released in 1971 and went to number 5 in the UK.

The song was written by Lindisfarne member Rod Clements and sung by Ray Jackson. Some say the song parallels Mr Tamborine Man by Bob Dylan. I love finding “new” old music to listen to. Life On Mars provided me with a lot of music I never heard.

The mandolin solo in Maggie May by Rod Stewart was played by Ray Jackson. On the “Every Picture Tells A Story”album liner notes, it is stated that “The mandolin is played by the mandolin player in Lindisfarne. The name slips my mind.”

  1. Before hearing this on Life On Mars- the only Lindisfarne song I had ever heard was Run For Home-which was a minor hit in the US in the late 70’s.

    1. You know when I heard the song it sounded familiar but I don’t remember ever hearing it before. It may just be one of those songs… I just listened to Run For Home and I don’t remember that one…

      Off Topic… I can’t believe its almost been 30 years since I first saw Tim Burton’s Batman… I had a bad case of feeling OLD… Son thought it was great…he has seen it before but big screen changes everything. He loved Jack of course.

      1. 30 years wow… I haven’t seen it since seeing it in the theaters back then. I remember how hyped that movie was. It was a movie everyone had to see. Yes a great big screen movie.

      4. My son loved it and the big screen changes every movie. We saw the Shining a few years back and it was a different experience. We are seeing “Superfly” in Nashville on Tuesday night. I like seeing these reissues.

      5. We were in Gettysburg over the weekend- a couple days after we left the local theater was showing Blazing Saddles- which has to be in my opinion one of the funniest movies ever. Would have liked to have seen it on the big screen… Yes love seeing the classics on big screen- three that stick out- seeing Citizen Kane, Lawrence Of Arabia and Gone With The Wind on the big screen.

      6. Citizen Kane I would love to see… My mom once told me when she was a kid she saw Gone With The Wind in the fifties in a theatre… they took three intermissions for people to stretch their legs…
        I’ve never seen Lawrence of Arabia…ever…I know I need to…
        I love Blazing Saddles also…I would love to see it on Big Screen also.

        I just asked my son who is beside me… he gave me one I’ve never seen…”Let there be Blood” in 2007… I don’t know that one.

      9. I hadn’t seen Shindler’s List since the theaters until a couple weeks ago- still holds up well and powerful… Let There Be Blood was outstanding… also- The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. I saw them when they were released and a few years ago there was a Sunday when a theater near Pittsburgh had all three extended versions back to back to back- 12 hours- my wife and I took all them in. A long day at the theater- but it was a lot of fun.

      10. WOW no way my wife would sit through 12 hours…I would though. That would be great. We are paying more attention to the flashback cinema now to see what is playing…

      11. I think they are at a theater a half hour away but I have forgotten to keep up with what is playing.. My wife loved the LOTR movies too… If they did that again I’d go!! Would love to see them do that with the Godfather movies.

      12. Yes The Godfather movies and Star Wars … the original of course.
        I can’t believe my son found Superfly playing. I just can’t miss it if just for Curtis Mayfield

      14. It’s a B movie with an original plot… they used some real policemen and hookers and the famous car was a real pimps car I believe…. The best way I can explain it is Jackie Brown with a cheap budget… but it was better than the other blacksploitation movies to me anyway.

      16. I’m a fan of some B movies…like Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry and also the original Gone in 60 seconds.
        The plot is worth it in Superfly… It is pure seventies of course.

      19. Well. I do like the old ones and liked the new ones. I like Time Travel.
        You might want to try the first two seasons of the rebooted series out and see if you like them. I really got into them…quality kinda of faded around 2014 or so.

      26. Levant was a name i knew of- after reading on him I had to do some research on him too- what a lot of great quotes he had!! In the book he was a real trip! Harpo really drew in the characters.

      28. I am not big on autobiographies- but this one is terrific. I wish I had known the guy- he is the anti- Mike Love- no ego. What an entertaining book. I can’t imagine anyone today having the adventures he did back then.

      29. From what I’ve read he was really that nice. All the other Marx Brothers kids would come over to his house because he was wonderful to them. Groucho could be a difficult father and Miriam would go over to Harpo’s when she could. Dogs and Kids loved him…

      31. You know I don’t know… that would be interesting. I’ve read Marx bios but they never go deep into their personal lives from what I remember.

  2. I’ve always loved this song, and Run for Home, but never thought to look up the band. This will make me look them up and compile a playlist. About Life on Mars, I’ve always lamented that I didn’t discover the show until its last two episodes. If it is available to stream, I’ll want to watch the rest of the episodes.

      I hope you can discover a way to see Ashes to Ashes. If I see any streaming of it I’ll let you know.

    2. I’m an idiot… I’m sorry… I was talking to someone else about Ashes to Ashes… I didn’t mean to add that to your comment…but saying that… ashes to ashes is the follow up to life on mars… not as good but finishes the story…
